Day 17: A Season of Giving
Guest Blog by Pastor Doug Neal
During our morning service on November 9th, I spoke a word of encouragement that we are entering a season of giving. Though I don’t doubt that God strategically implemented this season in the midst of the holidays, I want to reemphasize that this season of giving is not according to the calendar or the holiday season. After a few days of meditation I began to understand that in these severe economic conditions people are greatly in need of financial assistance and other areas of help. As we yield to God’s Spirit of compassion and giving, our efforts will profoundly impact the lives of those to whom we give.
This season of giving is different from a season of sowing. A season of sowing bears with it the purpose and expectation of a harvest. Although giving always has a promise of reward, this season focuses our attention simply on giving to those in need and making a difference in their lives. It follows suit with Luke 6:35 and inspires us to give expecting nothing in return. The recent economic turmoil has opened a door for the church to be the salt and light it was called to be. If we yield to the call of God’s Spirit in this season, the joy we bring to those in need will be its own reward.
